I'm vaguely aware of this, but unlike Linux packages I can't seem to find a 
tarball I can ./configure && make && make install to try it out...

The argument "make 3.79 has bugs we're sick of working around" is stronger 
than "make 3.80 has l33t new features we can't live without", and poking at 
the BSD make seems like a way to separate the cases.
