I think this is avoidable, at least almost entirely if not quite.

I'd like to rant from the desktop side: I don't want bloat even for
desktop use. One of the things I love about BB is that it gives errors
when using (most) non-SUSv3 options. This makes it really easy to
track down and fix broken shell scripts that depend on GNUisms, which
is important when releasing portable software.
