cross-compiling Busybox 1.00

Hey,

I'm using a PPC405 cross compiler to build busybox v 1.0 and ran across
a build problem. Near the end, it tells me

/busybox-1.00/coreutils/coreutils.a: could not read symbols: File in
wrong format

It did the same thing to me previously with the archival.a file, so I
removed all the archival utilities from the Busybox build to fix the
problem. What would cause such an error?
