Unable to reproduce:

$ egrep "(PREFER_APPLETS|HUSH)" .config
# CONFIG_FEATURE_PREFER_APPLETS is not set
# CONFIG_FEATURE_SH_IS_HUSH is not set
# CONFIG_HUSH is not set
# CONFIG_HUSH_INTERACTIVE is not set
# CONFIG_HUSH_JOB is not set

Please send your full .config and give gcc and ld versions.
