even if i wasn't, i'm always happy to fix my own bugs.  on the
other hand, i _never_ would have introduced that awful goto, so
maybe it was better you took a crack at it.  :-)  ugh.  i honestly
feel that code like that is silly, but i understand the desire.

i've made one more commit, which includes a rename of the routine.

i'm done with that routine.  i'll follow with another commit to
change various callers to use it.
