buildroot: adding my own binaries

Hello,
I'm trying to use buildroot for a disk imaging/pxe project I'm working on.
Buildroot seems to be exactly what I need. I am trying to add some
custom programs to the filesystem:
1. I run 'make menuconfig'
2. cp the custom binaries I want into '/sbin'
3. run make

...I end up with a filesystem that works, but when I try to run the custom
binaries in the filesystem, It says for example:

"-sh: ./lzop: not found"

I am compiling a filesystem for generic i386 usage. the binaries I'm trying
to use were compiled on my debian 3.1 system.

Any help so I can understand what I'm doing wrong or possibly not doing?
I would be forever grateful;^)

Regards,
Daniel Petersen
